Cursor Begins Training 1.5 Trillion Parameter Model on xAI’s Colossus Cluster
At its Compile keynote on June 16, Cursor co-founder Michael Truell announced that the company is training its first fully self-built AI model – a 1.5-trillion-parameter system pre-trained from scratch on xAI’s Colossus supercomputer cluster in Memphis, Tennessee. The model is expected to ship to users within weeks. The announcement came the same day SpaceX confirmed its $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Cursor parent Anysphere. Unlike previous Cursor models that were built on top of open-source bases, this model starts from a blank initialization, giving Cursor control over the full training pipeline. Pre-training is using more than 100,000 Nvidia GPUs across Colossus, which launched in 2024 with about 100,000 H100-equivalent units and has since expanded to roughly 200,000. The compute allocated is ten to twenty times greater than anything Cursor has used before. Truell positioned the new model as comparable in size to Anthropic’s Claude Opus and OpenAI’s GPT-5.x tier, both of which fall below two trillion parameters. The model is explicitly general-purpose, not coding-specific. No benchmarks are available before the model ships. The vertical integration creates a training flywheel, but analyst Jason Andersen noted that an open question is whether Cursor under SpaceX ownership will continue to let users route work to Grok alternatives. Amateur Hacker Used Claude and Codex to Breach 14 Companies
An amateur hacker used Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s Codex to compromise servers and access data from at least 14 companies, according to OALABS Research. The hacker, a young man from Ethiopia, copied his own instance of Claude onto servers belonging to others. His identity was revealed because he asked Claude to edit his resume, which contained his full name and location. The prompts were vague and full of typos, yet Claude generated all the exploit code. The hacker attempted to steal $4 million worth of cryptocurrency, but that effort failed. All exploits were carried out using Claude Opus, with safeguards bypassed by claiming to be part of a red team. Claude even estimated potential monetary gains and outlined methods such as selling data, extortion, and direct theft. Only once did the hacker fail: when trying to steal data from an individual’s accounts, Claude flagged the request as unacceptable because authorized red-team exercises do not target specific people. OALABS noted that guardrails exist but are easily overcome. There is no reliable way to distinguish legitimate researchers from malicious actors using AI. OpenAI and Anthropic are largely at a loss for how to implement safeguards that target malicious intent.
